Tech Alert: Important change to ArcGIS Desktop licensing starting Sep 1
August 28, 2024
In April 2022, Esri announced ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene, ArcGlobe, and ArcMap-based extensions) would be retired in 2026 and replaced with the newer ArcGIS Pro desktop app and ArcGIS Online suite of apps.
Esri recently announced they are discontinuing licensing for ArcGIS Desktop, and starting September 1, 2024, Drexel’s licensing and access for ArcGIS Desktop will end. We apologize for the short notice of this change and any inconvenience it may cause. ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online are still available at no cost to the Drexel community.
Recommended action
If you have an Esri account and currently use ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online, no action is required.
Request an Esri account
ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online require an Esri account to download and use.
- Students, faculty, and professional staff can request an Esri account by emailing helpdesk@drexel.edu.
- For faculty requesting Esri accounts for an entire class, please email helpdesk@drexel.edu for more information.
Drexel-owned and managed PCs
If you’re using ArcGIS Desktop apps, we recommend you uninstall the apps. You can install ArcGIS Pro from Software Center for Windows.
Note: If you're working from off campus, you'll need to connect to Drexel's Virtual Private Network (VPN) before you can install ArcGIS Pro from Software Center.
Personal PCs
If you’re using ArcGIS Desktop apps, we recommend you uninstall the apps and download ArcGIS Pro (or use the ArcGIS Online apps). Learn how to download ArcGIS Pro from ArcGIS Online.
