The New CAEE Structural Engineering Laboratory

Project Title and Description

The New CAEE Structural Engineering Laboratory

The CAEE Department is in need of a new structural engineering laboratory that will be used for research as well as hands-on learning for undergraduate students. This project will involve researching structural engineering laboratories at peer institutions, interviewing all the stakeholders in CAEE to assess their laboratory testing equipment needs, identifying a site for the laboratory, and designing the laboratory. You will explore various options for the lab from a new stand-alone lab to a lab that is part of a new multi-purpose building, and perform a cost-benefit analysis for each option. You are required to design the new lab including a strong floor and a strong wall, new self-reacting frames, welding stations and crane supporting structures, in addition to designing the building that will house the lab, plus its foundations and building envelope. You are also required to design the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) equipment (e.g. HVAC, fume hoods, etc.) that will be needed for the building, and to select and locate all the necessary lab testing equipment.
