Bartram Gardens

Project Title and Description

Bartram’s Garden

Bartram’s Garden is the 45 acres of parkland, wildlife habitats, tidal wetlands, reclaimed meadow, and urban farm that remain today from the original 102-acre estate America’s first botanist John Bartram purchased from Swedish settlers in 1728. The garden is located to the southwest of Philadelphia along the west bank of the Schuylkill River which was both the site of industrial production for the city and the source of the city’s drinking water until 1909. The Senior Design Team will have the opportunity to work with the Director of Community and Government Affairs to determine appropriate strategies to support the program activities at Bartram’s Garden. Work could include strategies for remediating the shoreline to improve water quality of the Schuylkill River, design of various structures identified by the client as critical to their community programs, and/or miscellaneous infrastructure to support Bartram’s Mile, the southernmost gateway to the Schuylkill River Trail.
