Transfer Out

An international student that has a valid F-1 or J-1 student visa at Drexel University may request to transfer their SEVIS record to another institution.

Please review the following notes on transferring a SEVIS record to another institution:

  • F-1 and J-1 students must be maintaining their current visa status to request a SEVIS transfer.
  • F-1 and J-1 students should review and complete the Transfer-Out form and its required documents before legally beginning studies at the new school.
  • F-1 students may transfer their SEVIS record at the end of their current quarter of enrollment, upon completion of studies or during their 60 days grace period after graduation/Optional Practical Training (OPT).
  • F-1 students will need to choose a "transfer release date" on which their SEVIS record will be moved to the new school. The new institution then will issue a new I-20 after the transfer release date.
  • The F-1 student's program start date at the new institution must be within five (5) months from Drexel University's program completion date or the first available start date, whichever is sooner.
  • J-1 students that have graduated or are on academic training, must apply for their transfer prior to their DS-2019 expiration. Please contact ISSS for more information regarding the J-1 transfer process.
  • Any employment authorization that the F-1/J-1 student is engaged in (on campus, CPT, OPT, academic training, etc.) at Drexel University is terminated on the date of the SEVIS transfer.

F-1 and J-1 students who decide to cancel their transfer, change the release date, or transfer to a different institution than the one originally requested, must notify ISSS office before the transfer release date. Once the transfer release date has been reached, ISSS will no longer have access to the F-1 or J-1 student's SEVIS record.

F-1 and J-1 students should complete the F-1/J-1 SEVIS Transfer Out Form with additional documents to start the SEVIS transfer out process.
