Summary: As technology continues to develop, so do avenues that can be used to perpetuate online interpersonal harassment and violence. Research has demonstrated that as more people use online dating platforms, more people experience online harassment. This study aimed to understand and quantify sexual victimization in the digital age by investigating whether individuals using an online dating profile (defined as someone with an active online dating account) are experiencing or have experienced sexual victimization. If this answer is yes, to what extent are victims experiencing online harassment, be it in person or constrained to the online platforms?  Researchers hypothesized that individuals with active online dating profiles will experience more victimization than individuals who do not have an online dating profile. The knowledge gathered from this survey reveals a necessity for future research to investigate the characteristics of victims and perpetrators of these crimes. These results may also have policy implications such as increasing the precautions and safety measures of online dating application users.

Applications of Mentoring in Organizational and Academic Contexts
PhD Student, Educational Leadership and Learning Technologies
School of Education

Summary: My research examines the different applications of mentoring and its associated benefits. I will present on two on-going projects. The first project examines the experiences of relational mentoring among faculty in a formal mentoring program through in-depth interviews. Relational mentoring relies on reciprocity: both individuals benefit from the developmental relationship. Thus, relational mentoring allows faculty, at different stages of their career, the opportunity to learn from each other, continued development, as well as receive career and personal support.

For the second study, the goal is to investigate the impact of mentor affirmations on job seekers. Specifically, if a mentor affirms that his or her protégé is a good and capable individual then what is the impact on the protégé’s levels of imposter syndrome, self-efficacy, movement towards their ideal self, and job search behaviors? Another important aspect is how minority status influences these relationships. If the findings support the hypotheses then mentoring can be a useful tool for job seekers.
