Next week is National Business Women's Week (October 17-21). There are so many incredible women who paved the way for my generation and the generations to come. Women initially entered the workforce out of necessity. They took over printing presses, shops, and many other businesses when husbands died, and they were forced to find work-arounds to bypass the laws that prohibited women from managing any type of enterprise. They entered the workforce to keep industry moving when men went to war. They entered the workforce to provide for their families. They bucked the system to do what they had to do. They opened up a door for women to make choices about their lives — they made it acceptable to choose to work, to climb the corporate ladder, and to enjoy it!

So many of these women, these entrepreneurs and businesswomen of the past, are faceless and nameless to us. They did not become famous, and they did not leave a permanent mark on our society. They did, however, likely leave an indelible mark on their children and grandchildren, giving them the power to reach higher and higher, continually breaking through that proverbial glass ceiling. And now, regardless of your politics, a woman has earned her party’s nomination to the highest, and most influential, job in our land. Young girls today will not experience the limitations once forced upon their grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

Over the course of the next week, please follow us on Facebook and Twitter to pay homage to some of these inspiring women.
