Soft Skills Wanted

For years, employers have focused on technical skills when making hires, however, that trend is changing. In a recent Forbes article, “9 Skills Bosses See Lacking in New Graduates” Karsten Strauss discussed some interesting data compiled by PayScale. Manager’s stated the following regarding recent graduates who took jobs in their organizations:
- 60% lack critical thinking and problem solving skills
- 56% don’t pay attention to detail
- 46% need to “hone” their communication skills
- 44% lack leadership qualities
- 36% need to improve their interpersonal and teamwork skills
These numbers are high. There is likely revenue loss associated with these percentages. Although not listed on a resume, you can assume hiring managers are reading between the lines to assess candidates’ soft skills. How are your soft skills?
