On January 2, 24-year-old Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, was tackled. He was hit in such a way that he went into cardiac arrest on the field, received CPR, and was taken by ambulance off the field as players and coaches cried and prayed on the sidelines. This came weeks after renewed discourse about head injuries after quarterback Tua Tagovailoa experienced his second concussion of the season, and Nelson Agholar from the Patriots stopped a game after noticing a wobbly DeVante Parker. For decades, the NFL has come under criticism for its safety protocols and some have challenged that sport itself is unsafe. These high-profile cases have lead people to question whether football as a sport and pastime, is worth risking the life and wellness of the humans who play it. Are injuries like this the risks athletes assume when they decide to go pro? Are there more adjustments to be made? Should we retire football? Come join us in the huddle as we draw up plays about football and safety.
