Project Title and Description
The Grenada Coastal Redesign Project
Grenada’s main coastal road connects its largest city St. George’s with many of the small island’s hotels and its university. Portions of the road flood during extreme events both due to high tides and surges and rainfall runoff flowing down the island’s steep hill slopes. Seal level rise will make such events greater in frequency in the future. The island is interested in raising the road so that it can double as a physical barrier protecting coastal development from the sea, but some provisions would need to be made to keep the runoff from building up behind it. The plan must also gradually relocate some of the hotels and other residences that are located on the seaward side of the road, since these will have no protection. And since eco tourism is at the heart of the island’s economy the plan must also involve the engineering of a new, accessible beach system.
