Wastewater Reuse for Delhi, India

Project Title and Description

Wastewater Reuse for Delhi, India

The Yamuna River Basin is a region of great water stress due to high population and limited rainfall. The city of Delhi is the largest population center in the Yamuna Basin and one of the largest metropolitan regions in the world. Delhi is actively pursuing wastewater reuse as a means of mitigating water stress in the basin. This design project will develop a conceptual basis of design for two treatment trains. The first treatment train will employ tertiary wastewater treatment followed by drinking water treatment with membranes and advanced oxidation processes. The second will use wetlands treatment and groundwater infiltration in place of membrane treatment. Sizing calculations we be performed and costs estimates prepared for both treatment trains. Microbial risk assessment models will be built to account for residual risk of infection after treatment. The costs and microbial risks of both treatment trains will be compared and design recommendations developed.
