Undergraduate Research Opportunities at Drexel University
By Andrew McCullough
Drexel's experiential learning model allows undergraduate students to conduct research — not just read about it. As an R1 research institution designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, we provide the opportunity for undergraduates from all majors to begin their research in year one. Below, I've shared some exciting opportunities to take advantage of as an undergrad at Drexel:
STAR Scholars Program
The STAR (Students Tackling Advanced Research) Scholars Program is an opportunity for first-year students from all majors to engage in 350 hours of faculty-mentored research. As one of our Undergraduate Research & Enrichment Programs (UREP), STAR Scholars provides students with a stipend, on-campus housing, and the invaluable opportunity to present their research at our annual STAR Scholars Summer Showcase.
SuperNova Undergraduate Research Fellows Program
Between sophomore and senior year, students can build upon their research conducted within the STAR Scholars Program by taking part in the SuperNova Undergraduate Research Fellows Program. This program provides students with research-related coursework and projects, including the opportunity to present their findings at undergraduate research conferences.
College of Arts and Sciences DrexLab Program
Drexel undergraduates with an Arts and Sciences major or minor are welcome to take part in the College of Arts and Sciences' DrexLab Program. Through field and laboratory experiences as well as specialty workshops, students can investigate and conduct research on a topic of their choice. Like the STAR Scholars Program, DrexLab Program students will conduct their research with faculty mentorship and gain experience presenting their findings.
There are few better ways to contribute to your field of study and broaden not only your but also others' worldview than conducting research. Whether you are new to Drexel or currently in the college search process, please do not underestimate the value that conducting research will add to your time as a college student. No matter your interests, we welcome you to bring your curiosity and eagerness to explore to Drexel, where you will surely find a home amongst your knowledge-seeking peers.
