Student Activities Bring Something Familiar to Your New University Experience

To some people, college is about trying something new. Maybe you always wanted to try a cappella singing? You can look into joining the TrebleMakers. Or, perhaps try a new sport like Intramural 2v2 Spikeball! You can search the wide variety of clubs and activities on DragonLink.

But the whole experience of going to college is very new and at times can be a little overwhelming, so it may be helpful to start out with an activity that is familiar to you. I knew when I got to Drexel as a first-year student that I wanted to get involved in the school newspaper, even if I didn't know any of the people involved. I had written for my school newspapers dating back to 2nd grade and became even more involved in high school, serving as an editor in my senior year.

Whatever you do when you get to college, continue something you love or try out something completely new.

When I started at Drexel, the student newspaper, The Triangle, was going through a rebuilding era. I can say a similar thing is happening now as Drexel gets back to normal, post-COVID learning. I didn't realize how much this would be to my advantage as a new Drexel Dragon. I was able to walk right into The Triangle office, now located in the lower level of the Creese Student Center (Room 050), and say I wanted to get involved! I wrote some news stories to start. I had friends on the wrestling team and asked if I could cover the team for the season. I love alternative music and got quite a few free concert tickets to see bands that were "newer" at the time, like Green Day and The Offspring, just by writing a review of the show. With the opinion section, I had so much freedom to write just about anything...very different from high school. And I'm sure if I had a strong business sense or was a good photographer or graphic designer, I could have helped with those areas, too.
