Drexel's School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems (BIOMED) was founded in 1961 as the United States' first Biomedical and Science Institute! With a mission to promote health and quality of life through education, research, and innovation that integrates engineering and life sciences in a global context, BIOMED students see solutions and opportunities. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biomedical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Biomedical engineering integrates the life sciences and engineering education that underlie the development of cost-effective technology for health care, including medical devices and diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.

Drexel is committed to use-inspired research. Drexel University has been designated as an R1 research institution from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. BIOMED research areas include Biomechanics, Bioinformatics and Computational Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Cardiovascular Engineering, Drug Delivery, and Neuroengineering. BIOMED has innovated through academic and corporate partnerships in China, Israel, Turkey, and Europe.

Maybe you are interested in bacteria inoculation, reconstructive surgery, or medical implantation. BIOMED students have held cooperative education (co-op) placements at GlaxoSmithKline Globus Medical, DSM Biomedical, Merck, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Bristol Meyers Squibb, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Johnson & Johnson, and many more employers. Biomedical engineering integrates the life sciences and engineering education that underlie the development of cost-effective technology for health care, including medical devices and diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.

Graduates of our Biomedical Engineering programming are prepared for professional education in dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, and law. If you are interested in obtaining both a bachelor's and advanced degree sooner than you would traditionally, you may consider accelerated degree programs. Drexel University offers an accelerated BS/MS in Biomedical Engineering degree program and the Biomedical Engineering major is a pathway to our BA/BS+MD Early Assurance program.

BIOMED offers a living-learning community and clubs and organizations such as the Drexel Biomedical Undergraduate Association (DBUA), Alpha Eta Mu Beta (National Biomedical Engineering Honor Society) and the Medical Device Entrepreneurship Association (MDEA). College Factual ranked Drexel's Biomedical Engineering program 7 (out of 96) for veteran friendliness of all colleges and universities.
