At Drexel Eye Physicians, the primary location of the ophthalmology residency program, the Department of Ophthalmology consists of a number of full-time Hahnemann University faculty members as well as multiple consultants/volunteer faculty. They teach residents and medical students, provide patient care and conduct research in their areas of interest and expertise.

The Department of Ophthalmology is located in the Arnold T. Berman, MD Building at 219 N. Broad Street, 3rd Floor, which is across from Hahnemann University Hospital. This area is fully equipped to handle all outpatient activities and brief outpatient surgical procedures. Ophthalmic lasers, ultrasound equipment, HRT, OCT, automated perimetry and ophthalmic photography are also available.

Departmental Strengths

Compact Size

Most activities occur in one physical setting, encouraging communication and enhancing departmental unity. Individualized instruction is emphasized and the opportunity for individual growth is encouraged.

Emphasis on Resident Education

No clinical fellowships are offered and none are planned. All educational opportunities are available to the residents.

Hahnemann Hospital is one of the principal teaching hospitals for Drexel University College of Medicine. Other affiliated facilities in the system include St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and The Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

Wilkes-Barre Veterans Administration Medical Center

Located 100 miles north of Philadelphia in a scenic recreation area, the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Administration Medical Center provides excellent opportunities for teaching and patient care. Each second and third-year resident obtains didactic and practical experience during the four-month rotation in a setting that encourages graded and supervised decision-making.
