Bridging Cultures: Transformative Journey to Japan With Tamagawa University

A Drexel student on her study abroad

This past summer, I was granted the amazing opportunity to study abroad with some folks at the School of Education at our partnering school, Tamagawa University in Tokyo, Japan. For two weeks, five classmates and I had the chance to immerse ourselves in Japan's culture, arts, history, and current events.

By the end of the trip, I realized that these two weeks weren't just about learning new facts — they were about building connections and gaining a new perspective on how culture shapes not only our education but our societies.

From the moment we landed in Tokyo, I was struck by the energy of the city — vivid neon lights, bustling streets, and the seamless blend of tradition and modernity. Our schedule was packed with enriching activities. During the day, we attended classes at Tamagawa University, where we exchanged thoughts with current Tamagawa students about education systems, global connections, and language courses. These conversations were eye-opening, allowing us to see differing perspectives on current events that impact all of us.

Outside the classroom, our experiences were equally transformative. We visited historical landmarks like the Meiji Shrine and the Kyoto Imperial Palace, which gave me a deeper appreciation for Japan's rich and extensive history. One of my favorite moments was participating in a traditional dance lesson while wearing a custom yukata!

By the end of the trip, I realized that these two weeks weren't just about learning new facts — they were about building connections and gaining a new perspective on how culture shapes not only our education but our societies. It's an experience I'll never forget!
