Culture in Philadelphia

Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia meant I never felt much connection to the city, but my experiences at Drexel and my first co-op created a sense of belonging and pride for Philly. Drexel allowed me to become immersed in the city lifestyle. Learning how to use public transportation, figuring out how to navigate, and exploring the city were all experiences that Drexel facilitated.
Not only have I gained valuable teaching experience, but I developed a greater understanding of the children of Philadelphia and how to best serve them as an educator.
My co-op at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool was another way that allowed me to become a part of Philadelphia's culture. Even life as a student in University City can feel separate from those of native Philadelphians, and my co-op was the first time I interacted with children and adults who were born and raised in the city on a daily basis.
Although my students are only 4 years old, they have helped my understanding of the city's culture grow immensely. They taught me the meanings of their names, the dynamics of their families, their favorite foods or places, and the values of the community. Not only have I gained valuable teaching experience, but I developed a greater understanding of the children of Philadelphia and how to best serve them as an educator.
