Join the staff of the Drexel Food Lab to discuss the latest research on effects of a low FODMAP diet. FODMAP is not a diet to help you lose weight, but an approach to help you identify and manage food sensitivities and intolerances.

The full acronym FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. While this might seem to be a mouthful, this talk will provide an overview of how you can better understand this popular "elimination" diet to help you target what foods are causing your gut to react.

During this talk we will discuss: What are FODMAPs and can they help reduce symptoms of dietary distress? Find out more information, tips for adherence and recipes to start your FODMAP journey.

Rachel Sherman, pastry chef and Drexel Food Lab project manager, will present this workshop.

Art making for self-care focuses on the process, not the product! Join us for a 50-minute Zoom session to e experience the inherent ability of artmaking to foster joy and to promote sustainable self-care habits. This session will be led by Denise Wolf, ATR-BC, ATCS, LPC, LPAT, a licensed and credentialed art therapist who is a Associate Clinical Professor in the Masters in Art Therapy and Counseling Graduate Program in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Guided by Denise and undergraduate students studying arts and wellness, participants will be prompted to then engage in non-threatening, arts-based exercises using common household materials. These activities are designed to be portable, accessible, and require no prior artmaking experience. Art making provides a psychological space where empowerment can be experienced and witnessed vis a vis the art itself. For the hands-on person who enjoys creative activity and experiential learning, this is for you!

A common misconception about mindfulness is that it needs to be practiced seated, in total stillness and silence, with your eyes closed.

In reality, mindfulness is simply (while simultaneously being complex) a practice of cultivating presence, and one of the most powerful ways to experience its benefits is by incorporating it into your day to day life.

Through a combination of a talk, meditation practices, and group discussion, we'll explore a variety of ways you can weave mindfulness into your life simply and effectively. You might be surprised to learn that it can be as easy as doing the dishes!

This workshop is open to all levels of mindfulness practice and experience. Come as you are.

Our instructor Dawn Mauricio (she/her) has been practicing and studying Insight Meditation since 2005, and has graduated from several Buddhist programs, including Spirit Rock's 4-year Retreat Teacher Training. She teaches with a playful, dynamic, and heartfelt approach in Canada and the US, to teens, people of color, and folks of all backgrounds.

This talk will explore the various aspects of how different sugars affect our body's metabolism and our brain's pleasure response. We will offer some perspective on how much "sugar" is needed on a daily basis and why the US Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting added sugar to less than 10% of daily caloric intake.

Jennifer Nasser, PhD, is a registered dietitian and nutritional neuroscientist with postdoctoral training in obesity research and addiction psychiatry. She has over twenty years of experience conducting human nutrition-related research. Her laboratory research focuses on the brain’s response to food and nutrients, the use of alternatives to food rewards, and how the brain’s response to food and nutrients, and use of alternative rewards varies across metabolic and psychiatric disorders. She is also engaged in community-based translational research involving the effectiveness of home delivery of medically prescribed meals and the application of nutrition-related health indices to the provision of food for the homeless.
