  • Your Safety Is Our Goal

    Tuesday, March 21, 2023

    9:00 AM-10:00 AM

    Virtual (Zoom)

    • Everyone

Public Safety is offering virtual, interactive, monthly presentations on situational preparedness. Students living in a new city and attending college are susceptible to encountering dangerous situations.

Being aware of your surroundings and recognizing situations that are potentially dangerous are key to keeping yourself safe. Although there are some public safety factors that cannot be controlled, there are measures students can take to prevent themselves from being victims of a crime. DPS will provide tips to encourage students to think and act accordingly—not to be scared, but to be prepared. If a student is the victim of a crime, it is vital that they report it promptly to Drexel Police so that the crime can be investigated and Public Safety can connect the student with proper resources. Register for an upcoming event via Qualtrics.

These presentations are hosted by Drexel Community Relations Officers Kim McClay and Thomas Cirone, and though they are focused on students, they are open to the entire Drexel community. If you have a community or group you would like us to present to, or would like to propose an alternate presentation time, please contact Officer Tom Cirone at tjc94@drexel.edu or Officer Kim McClay at kam556@drexel.edu to schedule based on your availability.

How do you recognize the early warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide? What are the myths? What are some tips for asking questions about suicide? How can you offer hope and get help for someone in crisis? Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) gatekeeper training is a nationally recognized mental health intervention that is much like CPR. It is designed to teach anyone the lifesaving skills of recognizing warning signs of suicide, knowing what to say to someone who is believed to be at risk for suicide and referring a person in crisis to campus and community resources. This initiative was started by the Counseling Center, and has broadened to a larger cross disciplinary partnership across the University to create a network of certified QPR gatekeeper instructors and QPR trained gatekeepers who believe that all members of the Dragon community can learn these skills and help save a life. At the end of the 90 minute QPR gatekeeper training, guests will be QPR gatekeeper certified and will receive a certificate, which remains active for two years.
