In celebration of Juneteenth, the Academy is offering free museum admission to all members of our community on Saturday, June 18.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, when on June 19, 1865, a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas, spreading the news of freedom to enslaved African Americans. Celebrated for 150 years by African Americans and now a federal holiday, it’s a time for us to gather with friends, family and our community as we reflect on, honor and celebrate Black achievements, culture, education and excellence.
And please join our friends at the African American Museum of Philadelphia on Sunday, June 19, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. for their Juneteenth Block Party: Celebrating the Legacy of Emancipation.
Hosted in partnership with Wawa Welcome America, this family-friendly event features live performances, food and drink, yard games, a village marketplace, mural making, community resources and free admission to the museum all day courtesy of Wawa.
