It is my pleasure to share our 2018-19 annual report. This was an exceptional year for research in our department and the university as a whole, with news that Drexel attained R1 research status as designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Education. This designation represents the highest level of research activity recognized by Carnegie and reflects the breadth of our research and its impact on society. Drexel is one of only 34 private institutions in the nation included on this list.
Research is central to our department’s mission, a fact that is reflected in our publications record. For 2018, Drexel Materials publications had an average impact factor of 16.3, demonstrating the significance of our research findings within the scientific community, and their potential for applications that will change lives.
Additionally, innovations from our department accounted for almost a quarter of Drexel University’s 44 patents issued in 2018, a level of productivity that placed Drexel at 51st on the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association’s list of the world’s top 100 universities for U.S. patents granted in 2018.
This report provides our highlights of this exceptional year, from new discoveries to faculty and student distinctions, to alumni successes and outreach initiatives that bring the fascinating world of materials to new audiences. I invite you to explore these achievements and connect with us on social media to hear about exciting developments in our department as they happen!
