Design of a Makerspace for a Community of Students and Native Americans in Farmington, NM

Project Title and Description

Design of a Makerspace for a Community of Students and Native Americans in Farmington, NM

In 2016, Farmington, NM was identified as the fastest shrinking city in the United States, leading to fewer economic opportunities in the area.  To counteract this trend and to provide greater opportunities for its students and the surrounding community, San Juan College is partnering with Drexel University to design a makerspace on campus.  This project will entail designing the retrofit of HVAC, electrical and structural systems in an existing warehouse, with a goal of efficiency in the use of energy and resources.  The space will be used as a makerspace for the local Native American population to create marketable products and services, as well as a space for local students from  San Juan College.  In creating technical drawings of the structural and mechanical systems in the designed space, special consideration will be made for the types of equipment and specialized use of the space.
