Why I Chose an Entrepreneurship Degree
When I was applying for college, I knew I wanted a career in consulting, but I wasn't looking for a traditional business degree. I sought a program that would teach the necessary business foundation but also foster my creativity and problem-solving skills. That's why I decided to look toward entrepreneurship, and after searching "Best Entrepreneurship School on the East Coast," I landed on the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship at Drexel
The first thing that drew me to Drexel was the co-op program. Co-op is our unique model that lets undergraduates gain up to eighteen months of full-time, paid professional experience before graduating — it's real-world learning that makes a huge difference.
Diversifying My Skills Through My Co-op
I am on the four-year BA track and spent my one co-op period working on project management at PECO. Now, you might be thinking, I thought you wanted consulting? While the timing didn't align for a formal consulting internship, I realize now that this unexpected experience was essential.
My time at PECO taught me valuable, hands-on skills in leadership and process improvement. By branching outside the usual path and diversifying my work experience, I gained a new sense of confidence in the workforce and strengthened my profile for consulting.
Learning by Doing
My career path solidified in a consulting class with Professor Özlem Ogutveren-Gonul. This course, which featured a mock project for a real company, highlighted the human side of business and leadership, sparking my interest in organizational development. Close School's "learning by doing" approach encouraged me to get involved on campus.
I joined the Drexel Consulting Group (DCG) and worked my way up to co-president. We now run educational events, such as "Consulting 101," and host corporate talks. Our biggest accomplishment is a new partnership established through the Baiada Institute, where companies apply for DCG services. This gives our members hands-on consulting experience in a beneficial environment. We want to break the idea that consulting is only for business majors — it's a valuable skill for any field.
Beyond the Traditional Mindset
I chose the Close School to avoid a rigid curriculum, but I found so much more at Drexel. In every class, I've been encouraged to think outside the box, embrace failure, and nurture my own individualism. Every teacher and student I meet is an inspiration.
No matter where your journey takes you, put yourself into an environment that will encourage you to get out there and do something meaningful!
