Sports and Philadelphia: A Perfect Pair

July 21, 2025
As a resident of Philadelphia, there’s nothing better than hearing (and feeling) the roar of Philly sports fans. Drexel is just 20 minutes from the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, where students can find the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers in their element. Grab some famous crab fries from the beautiful Citizens Bank Park and cheer with the most passionate fans in the country at Lincoln Financial Field. Over at the Wells Fargo Center (soon to be Xfinity Mobile Arena), you can catch a game or even a concert when your favorite artists stop by. Just 15 miles south, you'll find the Philadelphia Union soccer team and get a great view of the Delaware River at Subaru Park.
Philadelphia has a way of quickly making you more of a sports fan than you already were. I was lucky enough to be a part of the greatest celebration when the Eagles won Super Bowl LII — and have since experienced a whirlwind of Red Octobers with the Phillies and a second Birds Super Bowl win, all while living in the city.
The professional teams are not the only attraction for locals and visitors: Drexel University has made headlines in many sports. The University belongs to Philadelphia's Big 5, one of the most unique rivalries in basketball across America, in which six local colleges with NCAA Division I basketball compete in an annual tournament.

Including basketball, there are 18 Division I teams at Drexel. One of my favorite sports on campus is squash. Seven squash courts make up the Kline & Specter Squash Center, located in the Recreation Center and the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Additionally, club and intramural sports teams make up a substantial amount of the over 250 student organizations at Drexel. Our teams and clubs energize Dragons year-round.
Locals also enjoy taking part in boxing and running as city-wide traditions. If you've never seen the Rocky movies or caught the annual Broad Street Run, they may assist in understanding Philly culture.
Blocks away from campus, Drexel students can observe the storied Penn Relays in early spring and save the date for the 55th Head of the Schuylkill Regatta — right along the river trail! There is so much to get involved with in Philadelphia, even if it is by simply being a spectator. In addition to their world-class academics, Drexel students have so much to look forward to while living in a sports city.
