Why I Chose Drexel University and Philadelphia

I remember back in eleventh grade when it was time to search for colleges. Not only was I trying to balance academics, but I also had to think about what path I wanted to follow. Did I want to be in a large or small school, city, or suburban school, close to or far away from home? It wasn't until I came upon Drexel University that it checked all of my boxes. As I began to research, I knew this school would help me achieve my academic and professional goals while creating lifelong memories.

I'm a big advocate of a work–life balance so of course in between my academics and career exploration, I wanted to explore my new environment.

Although I was unsure of what I wanted to major in, I knew that the co-op program would help me solidify my career pathway. I chose the five-year, three co-op program to explore industries in my field. I was able to find out that the jobs I thought I wanted weren't the right fit for me and there are jobs out there that I never considered before. Prior to college, I only had part-time jobs and wasn't sure how to break into these professional environments. I was grateful for the COOP 101 course that taught me those skills, like how to write a résumé and interview. From my previous experience, I knew it was hard to stand out among many applicants. That's what attracted me to co-ops, the idea that you are applying in a Drexel-only applicant pool where these employers know you are prepared to work and learn.

Once I got to campus, I knew I wanted to take part in research. I was unsure of how to or if I had enough experience. I was drawn to the STAR (Students Tackling Advanced Research) Program because it allows first-year students to conduct a research project and present their findings in a student showcase. It was a unique experience that allowed me to connect with my professors and solve real-world problems.

I'm a big advocate of a work–life balance so of course in between my academics and career exploration, I wanted to explore my new environment. From Drexel shuttles to public transportation to walking, it is very easy to explore the campus and city. If you want to stay on campus and participate in student life, there are plenty of student organizations and clubs to join. I tried rock climbing for the first time and despite my fear of heights, I loved it. I also like how we are close to Center City and can explore the many restaurants, museums, and parks (student discounts sometimes included) in the area. I love Drexel and Philadelphia so much I continue to live in the city and help the next generation of Dragons pursue their passions.
