Thinking about a Gap Year?

A gap year, also known as a sabbatical year or deferred enrollment, is a period of time taken off between high school and college (or, in my personal case, the year after I graduated from college!). During this time, students often travel, work, volunteer, or pursue other personal or professional interests. While it is not a decision to be taken lightly, taking a gap year can have numerous benefits for students.

One benefit of taking a gap year is the opportunity to gain invaluable life experiences and experience an intentional period of personal growth. This can include learning a new skill, traveling to new places, or volunteering in a new community. After graduation, I volunteered at El Centro del Muchacho Trabajador in Quito, Ecuador. Undoubtedly, I point to this experience as the most pivotal in my life — I lived in community, worked long days to support the school and program, and formed bonds with families that have lasted my entire life. Whatever one chooses, these experiences can help students develop a better understanding of themselves and the world around them, providing them with valuable skills and knowledge that can be applied in college and beyond.

Taking a gap year can allow students to take the time to explore different career options and figure out what they are truly passionate about before committing to a specific degree program.

Another benefit is the opportunity to take a break from academia and refocus on one's goals and interests. This can be especially helpful for students who may be feeling burnt out after completing high school or who are unsure about what they want to study in college. Taking a gap year can allow students to take the time to explore different career options and figure out what they are truly passionate about before committing to a specific degree program. Some students use their gap year to work and save money for college, which can help reduce the financial burden of paying for tuition and other expenses. This can be especially beneficial for students who may not have access to scholarships or financial aid.

Finally, taking this time also give students a chance to mature and become more independent. It can be a great opportunity for students to learn how to manage their time, budget their money, and make their own decisions without the support of their parents or teachers. These skills help students succeed academically and in their personal and professional lives.

Overall, taking a gap year can be a valuable and rewarding experience for students. While it is not for everyone, it can provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable life experience, refocus on their goals and interests, gain work experience and save money, and become more independent. If you are considering taking a gap year, it is important to carefully weigh the pros and cons and make an informed decision that is right for you.
