Drexel's New BA in Law
One of the career goals that I discuss the most with prospective students and families here at Drexel is the pathway to law school. While there are the traditional majors like political science, history, and English that are often the go-to program choices for pre-law students, there is no "best way" to begin your journey to working with the law. One of my favorite parts of being an admissions representative is helping students navigate all of the amazing resources that we have to offer here at Drexel, and I am so excited to tell you that we just gained a fantastic new one!
Beginning this fall, Drexel is officially launching our new BA in Law through the Thomas R. Kline School of Law, becoming only the fourth university in the entire United States to offer such a degree at the undergraduate level. Adding this academic offering opens a brand-new pathway for anyone who is interested in exploring the law. To me, one of the most attractive parts of the BA in Law is the focus on access. By pursuing this program, students gain exposure to the field of law early on as undergraduates. This not only helps students academically but experiencing the field of law also helps one make more informed decisions in life, like navigating leases, wills, loans, and more. Often, when I speak with prospective high school students, one of the things that consistently comes up is how they wish they learned more skills to help them in the real world. This program offers an opportunity to do so!

Within this new major, students will be required to choose either an additional minor or major over the course of their degree. In doing so, students will be able to gain both breadth and depth in the law as well as expertise in a specific field. This kind of early exposure opens opportunities for students to engage with the law in different industries during their co-ops and upon graduation. The BA in Law will also still give students foundational skills like legal research, critical thinking, and analytical writing, along with others like an understanding of legal systems, the role of law in society, and so much more! All of these skills will provide a leg up for students in their post-graduate opportunities, whether it be with law school or through entering the workforce in any industry.
In keeping with the deep Drexel tradition of experiential learning, those in the major have access to a dedicated pre-law advisor and co-op placements in law firms and non-profit legal organizations. But, because we are Drexel, learning doesn't end in the classroom or even with co-op. Through extracurricular activities such as the Biddle Law Society and the Undergraduate Mock Trial Association, students can participate in opportunities to help prepare for law school and develop important skills, such as public speaking, familiarity with courtroom procedures, and quick, adaptive thinking.
Since our founding, Drexel has always had a mindset focused on innovation and ways to best support students' needs during their educational journey. The introduction of the new BA in Law is yet another example of this mindset at work. I am so excited to introduce this new major to all the students and families who are considering Drexel University.
