Support for Our International Dragons

Here at Drexel, we know how important it is to have the right people in your support network to help you achieve your goals. The college application process is both exciting and challenging; there might be excitement at the thought of moving on to the next big stage in your life, but uncertainty around what to expect. The good news, though, is that you're not expected to do this alone! That's why it's so important to begin identifying teachers, counselors, and university representatives that will help guide you through this process. In an earlier blog post, I shared the importance of identifying the support you need and asking for help early, the reason being that your need for a support network doesn't disappear once you are admitted and enroll at a university. In fact, this support becomes even more important than ever to ensure your success once you arrive to campus!

For international students, we recognize that the support needed may look different than for a U.S. citizen, and we are committed to providing the additional resources and guidance needed for a smooth transition to the University and the U.S.

Whenever I am asked what a "typical Drexel experience" is like, I find it challenging to answer because no two students experience Drexel the same way. With so many opportunities to personalize your experience — the number of co-ops, study abroad, civic engagement, etc. — the level of support you need will also differ. To get you started as an undergraduate student at Drexel, you are assigned a Student Success Team made up of your academic advisor, co-op/career advisor, Drexel Central Representative, subject-specialist librarian, and others, as needed. Additionally, the Center for Learning and Academic Success Services provides access to our academic coaching and tutoring services, as well as more specialized support programs, and the Drexel Counseling Center promotes and supports emotional well-being and healthy behavior for all students.

For international students, we recognize that the support needed may look different than for a U.S. citizen, and we are committed to providing the additional resources and guidance needed for a smooth transition to the University and the U.S. For that reason, international students are also assigned an International Student Advisor, through the office of International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS). Our colleagues in ISSS provide programming and advising on a wide variety of topics, such as immigration and cultural, financial, and academic-related subjects. And although the initial introduction to ISSS begins during the admission process, international students remain connected to their international advisor throughout their time at Drexel and sometimes even past graduation!

ISSS also provides a valuable connection to your fellow international Dragons from day one to help you begin building your community on campus. Whether it's a social event to learn more about the American traditions surrounding holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving or an informational event to learn more about visa and immigration requirements, international Dragons from over 120 different countries gather to share perspectives and contribute to our dynamic global community.
