Located across from Logan Square on the Ben Franklin Parkway, The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University has been dedicated to biodiversity and environmental science since its founding in 1812. It houses over 18 million specimens and archival works from naturalists, including those that predates the academy’s founding like Thomas Jefferson, John James Audubon and Lewis & Clark. These pieces are paired with changing interactive exhibits, a butterfly garden, dinosaur bones and more to create an incredible learning environment. The Academy has plenty of working scientists as well, researching both at home and abroad to provide accurate and up-to-date scientific information concerning the environment and sustainability to the public.
Three SEPTA bus routes run within a block of the Academy. Southbound Routes 32 and 33 use 19th Street. Northbound Route 32 uses 18th Street, while Northbound Route 33 uses 20th Street. Route 38 uses 20th Street in both directions. In addition, Westbound Route 48 uses Arch Street, while several Subway-Surface Trolleys and the Market-Frankford Line run under Market Street. Suburban Station is the closest regional rail station.
Phlash Trolleys provide quick and easy connections between the Academy and other Philadelphia attractions and hotels. Service runs from May 1 through October 31. See www.phillyphlash.com for more information.
Five bicycle racks are now in place in front of the Academy. These racks constitute the first installation for the City of Philadelphia's Adopt-a-Rack program, a program promoted by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.
