Q&A with Drexel University College of Medicine Leaders
Tower Health Academic Affairs Quarterly (Summer 2024)
By Wei Du, MD, MS, Professor and Academic Chair of Psychiatry; Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs, Chief Academic Officer and Designated Institutional Official, Tower Health
The community distributed model of medical education has been successful in recent years. Drexel University College of Medicine has been a trend-setter according to a recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Tower Health is very proud to be part of this progressive trend.
I am pleased to share my recent conversations with three colleagues from Drexel University College of Medicine, who shared their perspectives:
- Charles B. Cairns, MD, the Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg Dean, College of Medicine, and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs, Drexel University
- Nancy Spector, MD, Senior Vice Dean for Faculty; Executive Director of ELAM and ELH Programs; Executive Director, Lynn Yeakel Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership; Betty A. Cohen Chair in Women’s Health
- Cecilia Smith, DO, Associate Dean, Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health and Interim Academic Chair, Department of Medicine, College of Medicine
Read more.
Dr. Wei Du: Thank you, Drs. Cairns, Spector and Smith for joining this conversation. As one of the largest medical schools in the country, Drexel University College of Medicine has played a significant role in shaping the undergraduate medical education landscape. Now, Drexel is leading another trend in medical education by refining the distributed model in creating a four-year regional medical campus at West Reading in collaboration with Tower Health. We are very pleased with the progress of this campus. Medical students enjoy their clinical experiences at Reading Hospital and Phoenixville Hospital.
Dr. Cairns, could you please help our readers understand the importance of the distributed model and why Drexel has been investing in this type of arrangement?
Cairns: We have invested in the community distributed model of academic medicine because we feel that this is the best model for medical education and training. This model allows for significant community experience, which can increase the impact of medical innovation, including research, in the care of patients and populations.
Du: Thank you, Dr. Cairns. How do you see the new campus influencing the future of undergraduate medical education at Drexel and possibly beyond?
Cairns: The Drexel partnership with Tower Health at our West Reading Campus is proving the value and impact of the model, which is increasingly being adopted nationwide by medical schools. Frankly, many health organizations are looking at how we have coupled our medical education curriculum with community service.
Du: Dr. Smith, having served as the academic chair of Department of Medicine at Reading Hospital for 20 years and now as the associate dean for the West Reading Campus, could you tell us why Reading Hospital/Tower Health is well positioned as a prime education and training site for medical students?
Dr. Cecilia Smith: Reading Hospital/Tower Health is a level three hospital for medical care for the region. It is an academic institution that has provided the education of residents, fellows, medical students, nurses and ancillary medical disciplines for many years. The quality of care provided to patients at Reading Hospital has been highly rated by external objective criteria within the state of Pennsylvania and nationally. The education and clinical experience is both broad and deep with the level of critical care services, trauma care and neurology services. The multidisciplinary team approach to care allows the learner to understand the pathophysiology required to provide the best medical care. It also gives the learner first-hand experience of the value and need for a multidisciplinary team approach to care.
Du: Faculty engagement and development are essential to the success of a regional campus. Dr. Spector, as the senior vice dean for faculty, could you please tell us what strategies you and your office have developed to ensure faculty development in a regional campus?
Dr. Nancy Spector: In my role as senior vice dean for faculty, I have worked with our Office of Faculty team on several strategic initiatives to ensure robust faculty development and engagement across our regional campuses. We have implemented a virtual New Faculty Orientation to seamlessly integrate new faculty members regardless of their location. Our mid-career faculty development program, Faculty Launch, provides targeted support and resources to help faculty advance their careers. We also ensure that faculty from regional campuses are actively involved in standing committees and college-wide initiatives, fostering a sense of inclusion and shared governance. Additionally, we host an annual Faculty Professional Development Day, offered in a hybrid online and in-person format, which brings together faculty from all campuses to participate in workshops, networking opportunities and collaborative sessions aimed at enhancing their professional skills and career growth.
To support these initiatives, we utilize the Faculty Affairs Dashboard, which provides valuable insights and data to inform our programs and track faculty progress, ensuring that our development efforts are data-driven and impactful. These efforts are part of our commitment to supporting faculty development and fostering a cohesive, inclusive academic community. We are also proud of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) and Executive Leadership in Healthcare (ELH) programs, which offer an intensive one-year fellowship of leadership training with extensive coaching, networking and mentoring opportunities aimed at expanding the national pool of qualified women candidates for leadership in academic medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy. One of this year’s ELH fellows is Suzanne Wenderoth, MD, who serves as executive vice president and chief medical officer at Tower Health and Reading Hospital, and professor of clinical medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine.
Additionally, we have robust funding opportunities available for faculty development initiatives. These opportunities include grants and awards aimed at supporting faculty research, professional development and innovative teaching practices. We also encourage and facilitate faculty attendance at relevant conferences, including those organized by the Association of American Medical Colleges, where they can network, learn best practices and stay updated on industry trends.
Du: It is required by the LCME that a medical school must ensure comparable educational experiences for medical students and equivalent methods of assessment across regional campuses. Dr. Smith, could you please share with us some of the early outcomes data from our West Reading Campus in the context of comparability?
Smith: Comparable educational experience of the medical student during all four years of education is prioritized. This is measured through surveys as well as objective assessment of medical knowledge by testing skills and student progress. National outcomes are available to the leadership of the school for comparative evaluation with other medical education institutions as well as internally within the school between campuses. The medical students at Drexel University College of Medicine rank highly and equally across our sites of educational experiences and with many medical institutions across the nation.
Du: Dr. Spector, are there any new faculty development programs you have in mind that might be specifically valuable to our faculty at Tower Health?
Spector: Absolutely. We are actively exploring several new faculty development programs tailored to meet the distinct needs of our faculty at Tower Health. This summer, we are launching a comprehensive needs assessment survey to gain in-depth insights into the specific areas where our faculty members require support and enhancement. This survey will serve as a critical foundation for our strategic planning. We encourage faculty to engage with our office if they have specific areas of interest or areas where they are seeking support. Based on the survey results and the identified needs, we are planning to introduce a series of targeted in-person programs focusing on key themes such as mentorship, allyship, sponsorship and strategic career planning. These programs will be meticulously crafted to provide practical tools, resources and networking opportunities that empower our faculty to excel in their roles and advance their careers effectively. Our goal is to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that fosters continuous growth and success for all faculty members at Tower Health.
Du: To wrap up, Dr. Cairns, could you share a personal reflection on what the West Reading Campus means to you?
Cairns: I am honored to serve as the Annenberg Dean of Drexel University College of Medicine during this critical phase in the development of the West Reading Campus. It is a unique opportunity to integrate an outstanding health care system with extraordinary faculty and students in a truly engaged and inviting community. I am grateful to all in the Tower Health and Greater Reading community for the opportunity!
