Public Speaking and Overcoming Stage Fright

Empty auditorium

Public speaking has always been a challenge for me. My initial experience was during a sixth-grade class presentation on Bill Gates. Despite rehearsing and reassuring myself beforehand, I managed only a few sentences before losing my train of thought. Returning to my seat, I felt embarrassed, anticipating a poor grade.

This persistent nervousness in front of an audience was daunting. As an introvert, even one-on-one interactions were a stretch, making public speaking seem insurmountable. However, I recognized the necessity of improving my communication skills for both academic and professional growth. Countless opportunities and connections can be missed due to reluctance in initiating conversations.

By confronting fears and stepping beyond comfort zones, we earn respect and foster personal development.

Upon entering college, I committed to stepping out of my comfort zone. Though challenging, this decision led me to meet remarkable individuals and mentors. Humans are inherently social beings. By avoiding interactions, we forfeit the vast knowledge others offer — insights that can profoundly influence our paths.

This journey led me to a pivotal moment: an invitation to speak on civic engagement at Drexel University. Facing a packed auditorium, I questioned my decision. Recalling advice to confront fears for personal growth, I embraced the opportunity as a panelist. Anxieties about my posture and responses swirled in my mind. When my turn arrived, memories of my sixth-grade presentation resurfaced. Yet, I chose to release my fears, articulating my thoughts earnestly. Despite my nervousness and occasional stumbles, I persevered.

The session concluded, and to my surprise, fellow panelists commended my effort, assuring me of my improvement with experience. Their encouragement validated my endeavor. I resolved to embrace future public speaking opportunities, understanding that confronting fears is essential for growth.

The key takeaway is that anyone can achieve what I did. By confronting fears and stepping beyond my comfort zone at Drexel University, I earned respect and fostered personal development.
