Moving Forward: My Internship at the Tokyo Olympics
In July 2021, I had the absolute privilege and honor to travel to Tokyo, Japan. This not only was my first time out of the United States, but it was to work for one of the world's largest productions — NBC Sports' broadcast of the Summer Olympic Games.
From my experience, I learned to be adaptable and take in as much experience as I could.
For context, I gained the opportunity to participate in the NBC Tokyo Olympics Internship Program in late 2019 for the 2020 games. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and, ultimately the postponement of the games, my opportunity was delayed, but not denied. During my time, I worked as production and operations runner. From helping manage COVID testing communication to being hands-on with the opening ceremony, my time working at the Olympics was extremely eventful. Through my experience, I got the chance to put my skills learned in other production settings and in the classroom to use.
Outside of work, I had the chance to explore Tokyo's various attractions, such as the Meiji-Jingu Shrine, Imperial Palace, Harajuku Shopping District, Shibuya Square, and Skytree. I've wanted to travel to Japan since I was a little girl and to be able to work and travel was such a blessing. From my experience, I learned to be adaptable and take in as much experience as I could. I will forever cherish my time in Japan, and I am truly grateful to be able to work at the Olympics.
