Breaking Down Walls Through Co-op

Before coming to Drexel, one of the biggest draws for me was the co-op program. I was excited by the idea of spending six months truly working in my field, not only to gain hands-on experience but also to figure out what I liked (and didn't like) in a real work environment. As a senior, I look back now on my co-ops and see how essential they have been in helping me grow professionally.

I've gained more than just technical skills — I'm entering the workforce with a good understanding of the type of work and environment I want, practical experience, and a solid network.

My co-ops did more than build my résumé — they prepared me to navigate the professional world with ease. With each co-op, I went through the process of refining my résumé, sharpening my interview skills, and networking with colleagues in my industry. The practice of going through interviews multiple times gave me invaluable confidence. By the time I applied for my second and third co-ops, I had a strong sense of what employers were looking for, and I knew how to communicate my strengths and experiences effectively.

Networking, too, became less intimidating as I developed connections with managers, mentors, and peers who offered insights and support throughout my journey. It was so amazing to work on meaningful projects, and understand how different teams come together. I wasn't just a short-term intern — I got to be part of the team, and that gave me the chance to take on larger projects and see the impact of my work. I learned what it's like to be a part of a professional environment, from team collaboration to understanding office dynamics.

By the end of each co-op, I had a clear sense of the industry, the type of work I enjoyed, and the career path I wanted to explore further. I even decided to add a finance minor after my most recent co-op, something I'd never considered before. As I worked alongside professionals in data science and engineering roles, the importance of financial knowledge in the field became clear. Adding that coursework is going to help me be better prepared for a position that bridges technical and financial insights.

As I prepare to graduate, I'm grateful for how well Drexel's co-op program has prepared me. I've gained more than just technical skills — I'm entering the workforce with a good understanding of the type of work and environment I want, practical experience, and a solid network. Co-op was a big reason I chose Drexel, and it has certainly proven to be one of the most valuable parts of my college journey.
