The Judicial Resources Committee and Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization is pleased to announce the annual Summer Judicial Internship Diversity Project ("SJID Project") for Summer 2023.

The SJID Project's goal is to provide summer judicial internships to diverse law students from communities underrepresented in the legal community. Operating nationally since 2011, the SJID Project has placed approximately 600 law students in successful internships to date. Judges from around the country have registered to participate in the 2022 SJID Project and are ready to hire a JTB law intern!

The SJID Project is national in scope and will place law students as judicial interns in federal appellate, district, bankruptcy, magistrate and select state appellate judges’ chambers across the country. Interns will have the opportunity to draft bench memoranda, judicial orders, and opinions on a variety of substantive matters, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, magistrate judge reports, and habeas corpus petitions. Applicants should possess strong research and writing skills and be prepared to handle the rigors of working in judge's chambers.

Applicants who are hired must commit to participating in two mandatory training workshops prior to the beginning of their internship via videoconference. Additionally, applicants must be available to work full-time as an unpaid intern or to find outside funding sources and must commit to working in chambers for a minimum of eight weeks. At present, this is an unpaid internship. Applicants are encouraged to seek law school or non-profit funding.

Please view the SJID Project Announcement to find further details regarding requirements, scholarships, JTB partners, and more. The program requirements are detailed in the Memorandum of Understanding included in the above announcement.

A complete application includes this completed application form and the following supporting documents:

    • Cover Letter explaining the applicant's interest in participating in the SJID Project and the importance of diversity in the legal field.

These events are excellent opportunities to meet either in person or via Zoom to learn about these law firms, their practice groups, and the general culture of the firm. Think of these events the way you might remember college admissions and the role that showing up for a campus tour played in the admissions process. Law firms like to see your interest and they look forward to starting a conversation with you. So, if you’re interested in big law opportunities for Summer 2024, then consider RSVPing for events and showing up to mix, mingle, and make a connection. It’s that easy. Firms will usually give a dress code, and we can answer any questions you may have. There’s no pressure to attend every single event, but we wanted to share why you’re seeing these events and why they might be important to you.

In related news, starting in January 2023 you will see law firms setting up tables in the first floor lobby. These are also marketing opportunities for you to introduce yourself, sign in or register using a QR Code, enjoy some law firm swag, and ask questions. You’ll see more information about these opportunities throughout the spring semester via Symplicity and The Brief.

  • Peggy Browning Fund Summer Fellowship Program 2023

Applications for Round One Open November 21 and Close on January 13

The 2023 PBF Fellowship Program is expected to open applications on Monday, November 21, 2022, with offers starting on a rolling basis on Saturday, December 10th. Applications for the 2023 cycle close Friday, January 13th, 2023. The 2023 PBF Fellowship Program is expected to open applications on Monday, November 21, 2022, with offers starting on a rolling basis on Saturday, December 10th. Applications for the 2023 cycle close Friday, January 13th, 2023.

While fellowship opportunities will be listed from the open of applications, new opportunities will be added throughout December and January, so applicants are encouraged to check the website for updates.

    How the Application Process Works:

Students apply through the PBF Fellowship Application Form and a copy goes to both PBF and the mentor organizations selected. Mentor Organizations decide individually when they want to start interviewing – that could be right when they get your application, closer to the deadline, or even after.

Once the Mentor Organization makes a decision on who they want to hire, they are instructed to inform PBF Staff. PBF Staff will make the official offer to students as we explain the other benefits of the program and are able to give the applicants information about any other mentor organizations they're interested in. PBF staff will be totally transparent about what other organizations have been filled, pending, interviewing, etc. so applicants can make the best decision for themselves. Once applicants receive the fellowship offer from PBF staff, you'll have up to 3 business days to make your decision but can also accept on the spot.

If you have any questions about applications, contact info@peggybrowningfund.org.

If you are a 2L student interested in a paid internship with the SEC Summer Honors program in DC, applications are now open on USA Jobs and noted on Symplicity. A law school graduate who works at the SEC in Washington, D.C. is willing to serve as a mentor to 2L students interested in applying for the summer positions in DC. She writes, “[I]f anyone is interested in admin law/rulemaking or Corporation Finance, my office, Legal Policy 3 in the Office of the General Counsel, will be hiring an intern again. We provide legal advice to Corp Fin largely regarding admin law issues that arise in their rulemakings. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about the substantive rules, forms, and statutes that govern the work of Corp Fin and transactional lawyers. I have been the point person for our group and managed last year’s intern so would encourage anyone with an interest in these areas (or another area of the SEC) to apply.” Rather than share the graduate’s information widely, please email Dean Gerson at dgerson@drexel.edu and she will happily help you make this alumni connection for SEC in DC.
