    In Symplicity Events, 1L students will see listings for various law firm events such as “Home for the Holidays” receptions, Meet-and-Greets, and Zoom programs about the 1L summer experience. If you’re interested in exploring big law (firms of 100+ lawyers), then consider attending these “pre-cruiting” programs. It’s a way to learn about the culture of a firm, show interest (which is noted by law firm recruiting managers), and begin developing your network. Not everyone wants to work at a big law firm, and that’s OK! We need great public interest and government lawyers, small firm practitioners, and in-house attorneys, too. But if you’re curious, these events are an opportunity to investigate and ask questions.

    Don’t feel pressure to attend every single event – choose based on your schedule. Some tips for 1L students:

    • If you register, please show up (especially for in-person events where there is catering);
    • If attending an in-person event, bring a buddy – it makes networking easier;
    • If you have questions about attire, ask the CSO – we want you to feel at ease (or as at ease as one feels at a networking event);
    • If there is an opportunity to sign in, do so. This is one of many ways that firms track law student engagement;
    • Take notes and keep records of who you’ve met either in person or encountered on Zoom. When the time comes to apply for jobs, it’s always helpful to cite your prior contact with the firm in the cover letter; and
    • It’s appropriate to connect with speakers on LinkedIn and it’s recommended that you follow law firms on LinkedIn.

    In addition to the external events, look for Lawyers in the Lobby in the coming months. Employers from the Philadelphia area will set up an information table in the first-floor lobby for the specific purpose of meeting our students. These are meant to be informal opportunities for you to meet, sign in, and make a connection. You get to practice the skills you acquired in Professional Fundamentals in a familiar environment. All events will be posted on Symplicity Events and we encourage you to connect if this is appropriate for you.

    The application process for 2025 summer associate positions at large law firms begins as early as May 2024. Yup, you read that correctly. The recruiting process for summer 2025 (usually referred to as “OCI”) starts a full year in advance. The CSO will cover this process in much more detail after winter break. Since its deadlines are driven by the employers, we just want student to be aware of the timeline but there is NOTHING you need to do now.
