Disposal of Drexel-owned computers

Proper disposal of a computer is an important part of the computer’s lifecycle. Computers can create information security risks and contain hazardous materials that harm the environment if not disposed of properly.

There are several ways to responsibly recycle your computer or give it new life. Here are a few options that help divert electronic waste from landfills and mitigate the risks of the unauthorized release of sensitive or confidential information and violations of software license agreements.

Important: Computers must be removed from Drexel’s configuration and asset management systems, and securely wiped to ensure institutional data and licensed software are removed, before reuse, donation, or recycling. If you need help securely wiping your devices, contact your IT department or the Drexel IT desktop support team.

Reuse

Computers that meet Drexel’s Information Security for Institutionally Owned Computers (ISR-2) requirements can be reused within your department or the University. We recommend wiping and reimaging a computer before reassigning the device to another user. If the computer is no longer needed by your department, Drexel Surplus can help find a new home for your computer within the University.
