Dr. Annie Evankow, Post Doctoral Researcher in Dr. Jason Munshi-South’s lab (BEES Dept.) at Drexel University, will discuss “The Future of Collections: Discovering Novel Biodiversity & Signals of Change in Dusty Cabinets, Vials, & Freezers.”

Abstract:
Natural History Collections, including Drexel's Academy of Natural Sciences, store valuable specimens representing the biodiversity of Earth. When well-curated, these historic samples can be leveraged to answer many modern questions. During this seminar, Dr. Evankow will discuss how collections can be used to 1) find undescribed species, 2) discover associations between species, and 3) uncover signals of phenological and evolutionary change through decades & millennium.

Bio:
Dr. Annie Evankow joined the Munshi-South Lab of BEES in June 2025. Their current project is focused on urban evolution of lichens in Philadelphia and other global cities. Dr. Evankow is a trained collections-based cyptogamist, with experience working with plant, invertebrate, and fungal collections.
