Internal Transfer Policy

Requirement for Transferring Into or Within the College of Engineering

College of Engineering Undeclared Majors

  • Students who enter the College of Engineering as Undeclared can move to any major within their first two terms.
  • They must declare a major by Week 10 of winter term.

Students Who Are Already In the College of Engineering (Other than Undeclared)

First-Year COE Students

First-year COE students majoring in Undeclared Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering can move freely between College of Engineering majors during the first 2 terms of their enrollment.* Starting Week 2 of their 3rd term of their first-year, students in the above majors seeking to change their major from a current COE major to a new COE major must meet the criteria outlined below:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5

  • Be in “Good Standing”

Second-Year COE Students or COE Students with 70 or fewer credits

Students beyond their first year seeking to change majors within the College of Engineering who have 70 or fewer credits must follow guidelines for internal transfers.

*students in their first two terms can change between COE majors with the exception of those who join COE in the Engineering Technology or Construction Management programs looking to join the majors listed above. CMGT and ET students must follow guidelines outlined below for students seeking to join COE from other Colleges.

COE Students with 70 or more credits

If the student has completed over 70 credits, their change of major request will be considered case-by-case. The College of Engineering will review the student’s performance in both major-related courses and foundational courses from the first year.
