Program Overview

Students working in lab

Participants will learn about the three engineering majors in the CAEE Department at Drexel University, namely Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE). One of the main objectives of the summer institute is to provide a detailed overview of these three majors so participants can use this information to help them choose their major when applying to universities.  The summer institute will also cover important information such as different career paths, sample occupations, and typical employers for each major.

By the end of the week, participants should be familiar with the following:

What is Civil Engineering?

Subdisciplines of Civil Engineering:

  • Structural engineering
  • Bridge engineering
  • Geotechnical engineering
  • Transportation engineering
  • Geotechnical engineering
  • Water resources
  • Hydraulic engineering
  • Construction materials engineering
  • Sustainable engineering

What is Architectural Engineering?

Subdisciplines of Architectural Engineering:

  • Planning, design, and construction of buildings
  • Building environmental control
  • Building construction and structural analyses
  • Noise and acoustics
  • Air quality
  • Heating, air conditioning, lighting and water supply
  • Sustainable engineering

What is Environmental Engineering?

Subdisciplines of Environmental Engineering:

  • Water quality engineering
  • Water resource engineering
  • Outdoor and indoor air quality engineering
  • Ocean engineering
  • Hazardous waste management
  • Sustainable engineering
  • Groundwater engineering and management
  • Sustainable engineering

The camp will include presentations, field work, and hands-on lab and classroom activities related to the CAEE majors.  Activities will include:

  • lab activity to learn about engineering properties of materials in civil engineering
  • learning about surveying, topographic maps, and design a road
  • designing and testing a bridge made with balsa wood
  • activity about water treatment
  • activity about air quality
  • activity about architectural engineering design and lighting
  • activity about earthquakes and buildings
  • activity about foundations and soils

$850 includes lunch as well as all educational and laboratory supplies.

Applications will be accepted until July 30, 2020 and will be reviewed on a monthly basis starting in March 2020. Apply here.
