Major: Computer Science
Year: Pre-Junior
Hometown: Karachi, Pakistan
I chose this major because... I chose computer science as my major because it’s the ultimate platform for creativity and innovation. No matter who you are or where you’re from, you can take a little knowledge and turn it into something incredible. Unlike fields like physics or biology, where years of study and degrees are often required to make discoveries, computer science breaks down those barriers. With just a spark of curiosity, anyone can write a program, build a game, or design a website—it’s a world where ideas come to life.
Favorite Course(s): CS 265: Advanced Programming Tools & Techniques was amazing because I got to dive into Bash scripting, AWK, and, most importantly, C programming—a language that’s both powerful and fundamental, giving me a deeper understanding of how programs work at their core.
Clubs/Extracurricular Activities: AIAA (Aerospace Club), Alpha Omega Epsilon (AOE), Course Assistant Leader for Lindy Center of Civic Engagement, NASA L’SPACE Academy.
Co-ops I’ve done: App Developer @ UPENN
Favorite thing/place at Drexel: Hagerty Library and CLC at CCI
When I'm not at Drexel, I'm... When I’m not at Drexel, you’ll usually find me having a blast with my girlfriends—dressing up for a night out at fancy restaurants, exploring new gyms, or trying out fun workouts. I love getting creative in the kitchen, cooking dishes from different cultures, or just having friends over for pasta nights (which, thanks to my co-op schedule, has turned into a bit of a daily tradition lately, and my friends absolutely take full advantage of that). I also love playing some relaxing music while I cook, unwind, or just read a classic novel with a cup of hot chocolate. It’s all about enjoying the little moments and exploring new things with the people I care about!
When you are in Philadelphia, I think you should... When you're in Philadelphia, try CrossFit in Rittenhouse Square for an energizing workout. If you're in the mood to explore a variety of foods without committing, head to Reading Terminal Market—it’s a foodie’s dream. For a cozy moment, relax with a hot chocolate from Gran Caffé L’Aquila. If you’re looking for a romantic, moody ambiance, try PARC and their incredible steak—it’s the perfect spot for a special night out. Or, for something more upscale, check out Volvér or Sky High Philadelphia. And don’t miss a stroll along the Schuylkill River Trail—it’s perfect for a romantic walk with a beautiful city view.
Advice to new/incoming CCI students: If you're coming into CCI, here’s my advice: manage your time wisely. Drexel moves pretty fast, and the classes can be tough. Missing just 2-3 classes can leave you way behind, so don’t skip! Definitely take advantage of your professor’s office hours, and if you’re more on the shy side, just shoot them an email with your questions. Don’t let things pile up—take care of any issues early. Own your time here and make the most of it! You got this!
What is your dream job: My dream job is to lead a tech company with a team of brilliant, thoughtful, and driven innovators, focused on creating groundbreaking products that address the most urgent security challenges, especially for vulnerable communities and high-stakes organizations. Through advanced technologies that safeguard data, thwart cyberattacks, and deliver powerful solutions, I’m committed to reshaping the digital security landscape, using ingenuity and precision to solve critical problems and make the future safer for everyone.
Favorite Animated Character: My favorite anime character is Lelouch vi Britannia from Code Geass. His intelligence, strategic mind, and determination really resonate with me.
Bio
I’m Maarij Khan, a Computer Science major focusing on AI, Machine Learning, and Computer Security & Privacy. Outside of tech, I’m intrigued by human nature—why we make the decisions we do—and how those choices shape global economics and geopolitics. I also enjoy watching sci-fi documentaries, learning about ancient civilizations, and exploring psychology and MBTI. In my free time, I love trying out different restaurants, experimenting with new workouts, and spending time with friends.
