Office of Faculty Faculty Awards

Faculty Awards were presented at the annual Faculty Professional Development Day at the Queen Lane Campus on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

Faculty Awards that were presented on Faculty Day include:

Excellence in Research and Scholarship

  • New Investigator Award: Liang Qiang, MD, PhD (Neurobiology & Anatomy) and Priscila Sato, PhD (Pharmacology & Physiology)
    Each year, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies presents a New Investigator Award to recognize a promising and outstanding evolving investigator in the early stages of their career. Basic science faculty with tenure-track appointments for a period of no more than seven years are eligible. The chair of a basic science department may nominate one person for this award.
  • Early Career Clinical Scientist Award: Warren Chang, MD (Radiologic Sciences)
    This award is presented to an early or mid-career level faculty member who has already made a significant contribution to the field of biomedical research, educational research, quality improvement, community engagement, and/or health care research, as evidenced by funding, scholarly productivity and research leadership.  
  • Julian Marsh Faculty Scholar Award:  Patrick Loll, PhD (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)
    This award will be presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in clinical or basic scientific research, achieved national/international recognition, demonstrated outstanding teaching skills, mentored students as well as peers, and provided consistent, high-quality leadership to the medical school, thereby creating a better environment for all faculty and students.

Excellence in Education

  • June Klinghoffer Clinical Educator Award:  Mary Ann Kuzma, MD (Medicine)
    This award will be presented to a faculty member who has devoted their career to promoting excellence in the learning of clinical skills and clinical knowledge, serving as a teacher, innovative educator, leader, role model and mentor for students, residents and faculty colleagues alike.
  • Angelo Pinto Basic Science Educator Award:  Dana Farabaugh, MD (Obstetrics & Gynecology)
    This award will be presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated commitment and excellence to the education of graduate and/or medical students through innovative educational programs, serving as a teacher, leader, mentor and role model to students and colleagues alike.

Excellence in Patient Care

  • Emerging Clinical Leader and Innovation Award: Nitin Bhanot, MD (Medicine)
    This award recognizes an early or mid-career faculty member who exhibits visible leadership abilities to drive innovative advances in patient care delivery or advocacy, quality improvement initiatives, or innovations in medical education, leading to creative projects with potential for sustainability and great impact at Drexel University College of Medicine. 
  • Oksana Korzeniowski Patient Care Award:  Jody Leonardo, MD (Neurosurgery)
    This award will be presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding skills and commitment in the clinical care of patients and through their teaching has substantially improved the skills and knowledge of residents, students and medical colleagues.
  • William Likoff Clinical Excellence Award:  Richard Hamilton, MD, MBA (Emergency Medicine)
    This award will be presented to a faculty member whose professionalism, humanity, ethical standards, diagnostic acumen and ability to develop outstanding clinical programs serves as a role model for those striving for excellence in the practice of medicine.

Excellence in Community Outreach

  • Vincent Zarro Community Outreach Award: Eugene York, MD (Medicine)
    This award will be presented to a faculty member whose exemplary and selfless commitment to the care of members of medically underserved communities serves as the standard for medical students seeking to attain the medical school’s exit objective requiring them to provide high-quality care to all regardless of age, race, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religion and to be an advocate for uniform access to health care.

Excellence in Mentoring and Leadership

  • Elias Abrutyn Mentoring Award: Eishi Noguchi, PhD (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)
    This award is presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in mentoring colleagues, residents and/or students, by creating a supportive, effective environment in one or more of the following areas:  research, clinical care, education and scholarship, while advocating for the advancement of their mentees in their chosen discipline and serving as a trusted advisor and role model.
  • Daniel V. Schidlow, MD, Transformational Leadership Award: Peter Baas, PhD (Neurobiology & Anatomy)
    Presented to a faculty member who exhibits substantial leadership to transform and make change through example and articulates an energizing vision. This faculty member encourages, inspires, mentors and sponsors a diverse, inclusive and equitable next generation of clinicians, scientists, educators and staff. This transformational faculty leader motivates members of the institution to innovate and create change that will help grow and shape the future success of the institution.

Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Impact

  • Drexel College of Medicine Diversity and Inclusion Impact Award: Anastasios Kapetanos, MD (Medicine)
    Presented to a faculty or staff member who has demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity, has made significant contributions to promoting inclusivity in the community, and who has driven intentional impact in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and health equity at the College.
