Our gratitude goes out to all ELUMs who give their time and energy to help us move forward in our mission to increase the number and impact of women in academic medicine leadership.

ELAM relies heavily on our ELUM community to develop and connect successful professionals in academic medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy, so that they can confidently lead, which will propel academic medicine and health care forward into the future and optimize patient outcomes. Listed below are a number of ways in which you can gift your time and expertise to ELAM. We ask that you take the time to read through each opportunity and think about how you can contribute.

Volunteer opportunities include:

ELAM Admissions

  • Review, score and provide written feedback for 5 applications
  • Approximately 6 to 8 hours of time from January to March
  • Expertise/skills needed:
    • Distilling complex applications
    • Knowledge of career development opportunities
    • Ability to assess readiness for institutional leadership

Educational Quality and Improvement (EQI) Committee

  • Review the curriculum and feedback from fellows for opportunities for improvement
  • Approximately four 2-hour conference calls, each preceded by 1 to 2 hours of review
  • Expertise/skills needed: interest in program design and evaluation

ELUMs volunteering their time as Learning Community Advisors

Programmatic Support

Learning Community (LC) Advisors

  • Guide the process of LC members organizing, following good processes and establishing practices of mutual support for each other and for fellowship assignments
  • Attend 2 to 3 days of each ELAM session (three sessions), hold 2 to 3 conference calls with the director, and 2 monthly conference calls with LC
  • Expertise/skills needed:
    • ELUMs a few years out from ELAM
    • Empathic listening, open inquiry and mindfulness in moments of dissent
    • Skill in managing effective team process and drawing out wisdom of group members
    • Ability to draw upon broad perspectives and experiences to enhance inclusion among group members

Panelists for Meet the Leaders – Conversations on Power and Politics: 3-4 alumni/year

  • Share your stories of experiences with organizational politics, generous use of power and challenges of leadership transitions
  • 45 minute prep phone call with director, 2-hour event during the spring session of ELAM, and the possibility of providing 3 to 6 career consultations for fellows, as well as participate in any fellowship activities over the course of the session
  • Expertise/skills needed:
    • Experience with leadership job transitions and working with diverse staff
    • The ability to tell a good story that reveals challenge and sometimes failure from the position of having learned and moved forward
    • The ability to engage an audience and share the stage with other leaders

Institutional Action Project (IAP) Peer Consultants

  • Meet with small groups of 3 to 4 fellows whose projects share a similar focus to bring the voices of experience to development of their IAPs
  • 1-hour orientation and 2-hour consultation during the ELAM winter session; 1 to 2 hour prep; potential small amount of time of follow-up as interested
  • Skills/expertise needed: Ability to listen and provide meaningful input on fellows' projects
