First developed in 1983, the Blindness and Low Vision Studies (BLVS) Department offers four master’s degrees and certificate programs in Low Vision Rehabilitation (LVR), Orientation and Mobility (O&M), Teacher of Students with Vision Impairments (TVI) and Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT). Each program prepares highly qualified professionals to support individuals with blindness and low vision through the education and rehabilitation process.

Low Vision Rehabilitation
The Master of Science (MS) degree and Certificate programs in Low Vision Rehabilitation (LVR) prepares professionals in rehabilitation, eye care, education and other related professions to work more effectively in clinical rehabilitation and educational settings with people who have low vision.

Orientation and Mobility
The Master of Science (MS) and Certificate programs in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) are tailored to each individual, with instruction typically conducted one-on-one. Skills included are the effective use of the individual’s remaining senses, concept development, orientation skills, problem-solving skills, use of a long cane or other mobility systems, instruction in the use of optical and/or electronic devices, and travel in a variety of settings.

Blindness and Vision Impairment
The Master of Education (MEd) in Blindness and Vision Impairment and Certificate programs for Teacher of Students with Vision Impairments (TVI) are competency-based and offer coursework and practical experiences that develop the necessary knowledge and skills required for the instruction of infants, children and youth who are blind or visually impaired, and those with multiple disabilities.
