Why did you choose to study Biological Science (now Biomedical Studies) at Drexel?

As a senior in college, I recognized that my academic records did not reflect my potential as a medical school applicant so I decided to look into post-baccalaureate programs. Out of the many programs that I was accepted to, Drexel was clearly the best option for me. The school offered the unique opportunity to experience medical school courses while enhancing my scientific knowledge in courses that I had struggled with previously. In the first year my program was based around studying for the MCAT, which became very helpful by the time my test date arrived. In addition to providing an excellent continuation of my education, I was very much interested in the automatic interview offered by Drexel, since medical school was my ultimate goal. Initially the staff seemed extremely helpful and then they became indispensable once I arrived at the school.

What did you like best about the Biological Science (now Biomedical Studies) program?

Throughout my two years in the MSP and MBS programs, I very much enjoyed the curriculum that was taught. The first year was a great combination of repeated material and new, challenging material that was pertinent to my interests as a future physician. I was challenged by the courses and forced to find the best study habits, which have stayed with me since my first day in the graduate program. I have absolutely become a stronger student thanks to the challenging and engaging material.

I have also appreciated the guidance I have received from the faculty and staff at Drexel. In the first year in the MSP program, it was convenient and very helpful to have all of my professors on campus to talk to and discuss the material with. Although I was worried about not having direct access to the professors for my MBS year, every course professor was just as approachable and helpful via email and when I had the opportunity to speak to them in person.

Finally, this program--and Drexel in general--has provided endless opportunities to get involved with the Drexel and Philadelphia communities. As a teaching assistant I was able to appreciate the material from a new perspective and take on a leadership role that made me a more confident student and person. By volunteering with the PALS program, I was able to give back to the Philadelphia community.

What kind of research and/or community service have you done through Drexel and why do you think it is important?

When I arrived to Drexel, I was introduced to the PALS (Promoting Achievement through Learning in Science) program early on and became immediately interested. I became as involved as my schedule allowed and fell in love with the goals and values of the program. My fellow classmates and I traveled to a local elementary school where we prepared novel experiments for the students to conduct. Because of the structure of their school system they were only allotted a small amount of time per week, which could be devoted to science. Our visit allowed them additional scientific exposure in a fun and enticing manner and they loved whenever we visited. It is extremely important to educate children in an effective way, which I believe PALS does incredibly. The program also served as a mentorship experience for the students who were able to talk with us one on one while we worked through the experiments in class. I personally had the opportunity to discuss college and careers with individual students on many occasions. Many of the children attending this school are from an impoverished area and it is imperative to not only offer them an exemplary education but to also instill hope and desire in them to continue their education in order to pursue the careers that they hope to attain.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I will work as a nanny throughout the summer, and in the fall of 2014 I plan on attending medical school in Philadelphia.
