Application Services Platform

Since 1998, Drexel University has offered its software, platforms, human resources, and best practices as services to our colleagues in higher education and K-12 communities. Beginning with Drexel's successful rescue of the bankrupt Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, the university has replicated its Software as a Service initiative to help other schools looking to advance the state of their IT services.

Drexel's Application Services Platform offers smaller schools the same range of top-tier services that leading research institutions have used for years and without up-front costs for hardware, software, people, or professional services. The Drexel ASP initiative provides senior financial management with predictable annual costs for each service, removing the uncertainty of capital refresh cycles; it gives IT management relief from limited staffing due to vacations or illnesses and runaway expenses for professional services.

Academic Services

Drexel hosts Blackboard Learn 9 for a number of institutions. The Drexel learning environment includes the standard Learn tool, along with Blackboard Collaborate, Blackboard Mobile, and Blackboard Analytics. A number of third-party plug-ins and add-ons are also provided, including Turn-It-In for originality verification and Respondus LockDown Browser for secure testing. Services are provided on a neutral domain name so that Drexel's name does not appear to the students at other institutions.

For more information, contact Michael Scheuermann, Associate Vice President for Instructional Technology Support at mes27@drexel.edu.

Administrative Services

Drexel hosts ERP services for higher education customers in Pennsylvania and New York using Ellucian (formerly SunGard Higher Education) Banner and a complimentary suite of products designed to provide each school with full-spectrum administrative systems and analytics including admissions, financial aid, finance, human resources, and student.

Internet2 Services

Drexel provides connectivity to Internet2 via 100 Gbps connections in partnership with the Three Rivers Optical Exchange. 3ROX/Drexel offers 100 Gbps Ethernet links to the Internet2 high-speed research network from both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, supported by a separate 10 GE cross-state link. 3ROX/Drexel provides users with TransitRail-Commercial Peering Service (TR-CPS) to off-load overburdened commodity Internet links and is adding Internet2 ION Service. Together, 3ROX/Drexel provides service directly to 22 universities, nine K-12 organizations, and several government laboratories, businesses and educational networks.
