Dragon Dialogue: Understanding Substance Use/Abuse Among Working Professionals (15 Wellness Points)

This talk will provide an overview of substance use disorder (SUD) and how it relates to a population of working professionals. Specifically, this talk will address the differences between substance use, misuse, and disordered use for alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, and other relevant drugs. Additionally, this talk will provide a broad understanding of the relationship between mental health and substance use and address appropriate levels of care based on specific treatment needs.



Learning Objectives:



1. Consider diagnostic criteria of substance use disorder based on DSM-5

2. Understand the relationship between substance use and working professionals

3. Understand levels of appropriate care for substance use



Claire Lankford is a 4th year clinical psychology doctoral student at Drexel University. Her research broadly focuses on the intersection of law and human behavior, and how these interactions inform our current legal system and policy implementations. More specifically, her research interests include forensic mental health assessment, psychopathy, and alternatives to incarceration such as problem solving courts and diversion programs.



Simone Grisamore is pursing an MS in Psychology at Drexel University. Her research interests focus on policies and recovery models for substance use and how they interact with the criminal justice system. She has a background with community-based recovery models and has studied substance use interventions in clinical and research capacities for various at-risk populations. She is particularly interested in studying how policies impact individual drug use and alternatives to incarceration for substance users and drug involved crime while at Drexel.
