Engineering Design

First-Year Design

The first year of a Drexel engineering major’s college journey isn’t an easy one. There’s a lot to adjust to—leaving home for the first time, living in a new environment, making a whole new set of friends, chemistry, calculus and physics — and the ENGR three-term sequence of courses that is typically the first exposure students get into what being an engineer is really like. It will provide a taste of the engineering disciplines, foundation in programming and a chance to apply engineering design thinking to a real-life challenge.

Whether designing a better mousetrap race car, designing solar energy components, or brewing a perfectly chemically balanced cup of coffee, you will learn to work in teams to solve the engineering problem while gaining an understanding of engineering more broadly before heading into coursework dedicated to your major.

Senior Design

Finally, you get through the foundational coursework, move through the curriculum and complete your co-ops to your final year of study.

Senior Design is a three-course sequence is intended be a culmination of your studies that incorporates all of your gained perspectives to achieve an engineering goal.

Students work collaboratively in a team environment that simulates real-world professional working groups. Whether projects are culled from observed problems, industry partners, or inspired by a co-op, students work in teams to ideate, design, build, and present their findings to faculty and peers. It is the the summation of all of your hard work and a celebration of you and your peer’s achievements.

Every year the departments nominate team to present at a college-wide celebration of engineering design.
