The College of Engineering applauds our faculty who will attain tenure and/or promotion, effective September 1, 2020.
Dr. Nicolas Alvarez will receive tenure and the rank of associate professor. A faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Alvarez’s research focuses on the areas of colloid and interface science, structure property relationships in complex materials, and extensional rheology of polymer melts and solutions, a blend of soft matter physics, polymer dynamics, molecular rheology, and interfacial transport/mechanics. Prior to joining Drexel in 2014, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Denmark. He earned his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Alvarez is a recipient of the 2019 AIChE Delaware Valley Section (DVS) Outstanding Faculty Award.
Dr. Patricia Gallagher will be promoted to the rank of full professor. A faculty member in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Gallagher’s research focuses on advancing the field of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, advancing sustainability and resilience of the built environment, advancing women and underrepresented groups in STEM disciplines, and advancing the scholarship of teaching and learning. She achieved the rank of associate professor in 2007. Prior to joining Drexel in 2001, Gallagher was an instructor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where she also received her PhD. Gallagher is the recipient of numerous accolades including a 2019 Drexel University Evidenced-Based Learning Award in Undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education (STEM); 2012 Outstanding Service Award from the College of Engineering; 2004 Drexel University Allen Rothwarf Award for Teaching Excellence presented to Junior Tenure-Track Faculty; and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. She also was part of the 2009-2010 cohort as an Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Fellow.
Dr. Patrick Gurian will be promoted to the rank of full professor. A faculty member in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Gurian’s research focuses on risk analysis of environmental and infrastructure systems, novel adsorbent materials, environmental standard setting, Bayesian statistical modeling, and community outreach and environmental health. He achieved the rank of associate professor in 2010. Prior to joining Drexel in 2004, Gurian was an assistant professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Texas at El Paso. He previously served in the United States Peace Corps in Cameroon. Gurian holds a PhD in engineering & public policy and civil & environmental engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. In 2017, he received the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) Distinguished Service Award for service as Chair of the Government Affairs Committee. He is also the recipient of the 2015 College of Engineering Outstanding Mid-Career Research Award and the 2012 Graduate Student Association (GSA) Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award.
Dr. Gail Rosen will be promoted to the rank of full professor. A faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Rosen’s research includes machine learning and microbial interactions and evolution. She heads the Ecological and Evolutionary Signal-processing and Informatics (EESI) lab and oversees Drexel's Center for Biological Discovery from Big Data. She is a founder and serves on the faculty board of the University Research Computing Facility. Rosen achieved the rank of associate professor in 2013 and received her PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Rosen is a National Science Foundation CAREER Awardee.
Dr. Joshua Snyder will receive tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor. A faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Dr. Snyder’s research is focused on developing a better understanding of the nature of electrocatalytic interfaces as they relate to materials and processes for renewable energy generation and storage. Prior to joining Drexel in 2014, he was the Director’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Lab. He received a PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2012. Snyder was awarded the Toyota Young Investigator Award in 2016 and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
Dr. Tein-Min Tan will be promoted to the rank of full professor. A faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, Tan’s research focuses on aviation safety, with emphases in experimental and computational mechanics, advanced material systems, non-destructive testing and evaluations, fatigue and damage tolerance of metallic and composites materials, and crashworthiness studies. He achieved the rank of associate professor in 1990. Prior to joining Drexel in 1984, Tan was a visiting assistant professor at Bradley University and a postdoctoral research associate at the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University, where he received his PhD. He was previously a Boeing Welliver Fellow in 2009 and received the SAE International Faculty Advisor Award in 2013. From 2000-2002, Tan was a visiting scientist at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center Airport and Aircraft Safety Research and Development Division.
Dr. Maureen Tang will receive tenure and the rank of associate professor. A faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Tang’s research centers around electrochemistry, electrochemical engineering, catalysis, and batteries. Prior to joining Drexel in 2014, she was a postdoctoral researcher in chemical engineering at Stanford University. She received her PhD in chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and received the 2018 Outstanding Early-Career Research Award from the College of Engineering.
Dr. James Tangorra will be promoted to the rank of full professor. Tangorra serves as Department Head of Engineering Technology, is a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, and leads the Laboratory for Biological System Analysis. His research focuses on developing bio-robotic systems to investigate the mechanics and sensorimotor control of animal locomotion and understanding the role of engineering in conflict management. He was instrumental in establishing Drexel’s Peace Engineering program and the MS in Robotics and Autonomy. Tangorra achieved the rank of associate professor in 2013. Prior to joining Drexel in 2007, he was a postdoctoral associate in the Bio-Instrumentation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he received his PhD. He also served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy. Tangorra is a National Science Foundation CAREER Awardee.
Dr. John Walsh will be promoted to the rank of full professor. A faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Walsh’s research is in the areas of automation, computation, and cyber and physical infrastructure. He received the rank of associate professor in 2012. Prior to joining Drexel in 2006, Walsh was a visiting researcher in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He received his PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Cornell University and is a National Science Foundation CAREER Awardee.
Dr. Michael Waring will be promoted to the rank of full professor. A faculty member in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Waring’s research centers on indoor air quality and building sustainability, indoor particulate matter fate and transport, indoor chemistry and particle formation, pollution control technologies, and smart ventilation strategies. He achieved the rank of associate professor in 2015 after joining Drexel as an assistant professor in 2009. Waring received his PhD in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
