Current position: Public Health Analyst at the Washington DC Department of Health
Lawryn Fowler, MPH, graduated from the Dornsife School of Public Health in 2022 with a major in Community Health and Prevention and a minor in Maternal and Child Health (MCH).
Lawryn came to Drexel with a passion for Black maternal health, ensuring access to quality and equitable care, and chronic disease prevention among pregnant people.

What is your current role? How are you using your current MCH training?
As a Public Health Analyst in the Perinatal and Infant Health division, I provide programmatic support for programs aiming to improve birth outcomes. I am currently working on an initiative to reduce pre-term birth rates.
My MCH training provided me with the skills to assess the needs of the population we serve, be innovative when proposing new programs, and continually think about how to meet the evolving needs of the population.
How did your time as a MCH trainee at Drexel influence your career?
Drexel directly influenced my current career because it was through my Title V MCH summer internship that I was introduced to the Perinatal and Infant Health Division at the Washington DC Department of Health (my current employer).
The MCH minor courses increased my knowledge of Title V and the accomplishments made in the MCH space. I also learned about evidence-based strategies which have been very helpful in my current role.
Highlights from getting your MPH at Dornsife?
One highlight was being Vice-President of Peer Health Educators. It provided an excellent opportunity to meet current and former students as well as interact with Dornsife and MCH program faculty. After being isolated due to COVID, it was nice to have this community and connect with people with similar interests which helped reinforce why I am pursuing this work.
Advice to current and future MCH students?
My advice to current students is don’t be afraid to reach out to organizations, people, and former students that are on the track you would like to pursue. You never know who is willing to help and give you great advice. I have benefited from reaching out to people and building those connections.
