For Immediate Release
PHILADELPHIA – Drexel University’s College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) today announced that Bloomberg – a global leader in business and financial information and a Drexel CCI Corporate Partner – will sponsor the College’s 2022-2023 Senior Project Showcase. Featuring technical projects developed and presented by student competitors, the Showcase marks the culmination of a year-long program which supports student innovations from conception to reality. Almost 400 students will participate in the program in the 2022-2023 academic year – the largest class to date.
Drexel CCI’s Senior Project is a multi-term capstone experience involving in-depth study and application of computing and informatics. Students work in teams to develop a significant product using a development process that includes planning, specification, design, implementation, evaluation, and documentation. External stakeholders – such as corporate entities – typically conceive project ideas, guide the requirements process and, ultimately, use the resulting application. In addition to sponsoring Drexel CCI's Senior Project Showcase, leaders from Bloomberg’s Engineering and Data departments will also serve as stakeholders and mentors for two senior project student groups.
“I'm very excited to partner with a company like Bloomberg that has such vast data and talent resources and ideas to inform and nurture real-world student projects. Its leaders’ mentorship will be invaluable to participating competitors,” says Computer Science Teaching Professor and Senior Project Director, Jeff Salvage.
In addition to its Senior Project Showcase sponsorship, Bloomberg and Drexel will broaden their partnership to a comprehensive selection of professional development opportunities for Drexel students. Activities will include a series of “Bloomberg Days” on-site at Drexel CCI designed to help Drexel students network with Bloomberg professionals and to learn about opportunities at the company; on-site visits to Bloomberg’s Princeton Campus for both Drexel students and the high school students who participate in Drexel CCI’s summer Digital Development Camp; and other initiatives.
The partnership between Drexel and Bloomberg comes at a time when Bloomberg is greatly expanding its Engineering and Data departments. This effort is especially evident at the company’s Princeton Campus location, where over 500 of the company’s more than 7,000 software engineers and more than a third of the company’s Data team works. The company is also well-known for its philanthropic efforts, in which its employees often volunteer with local educational and non-profit organizations in order to give back to the communities in which they live and work.
“Bloomberg and Drexel have been vital institutions in my life,” explains Jordan Osecki, Engineering Manager with Bloomberg’s Data Technologies department in Princeton and Drexel CCI 2010 Alum. “Working at Bloomberg for the last 12 years after going to school at Drexel for the five years prior to that, it is so awesome that we’ve been able to figure out a way to bring both institutions together around something as prestigious as the 2022-2023 Senior Project Showcase. I can’t wait for the school year to begin for the opportunity for Bloomberg employees to help mentor students throughout the year and for us to partner with Drexel CCI on various events as well.”
The 2021-2022 Senior Project Showcase winners include Drexel Shuttle, a bus tracking platform for students to better utilize the Drexel bus system, and Player 2, a social networking and team-building app for gamers. Categories included: Corporate, Humanitarian, Research, Security, Entrepreneurial and Gaming.
