Drexel CCI’s Capstone Projects Prepare Students for the Real World

In May 2025, the College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) at Drexel University hosted its annual Senior Project Showcase, a celebration of student innovation, technical skill, and collaboration.

Under the guidance of Teaching Professor Jeffrey Salvage, the event marked the culmination of a rigorous, multi-term capstone experience. The capstone challenges students to apply their academic knowledge to real-world problems while extending the students’ possible experiential education at Drexel to 27 months, complementing their co-ops with significant interaction, oversight, and weekly mentoring by CCI industry partners during the project.

More than just a class, the Senior Project is a comprehensive journey through the software development lifecycle. Students work in collaborative teams to plan, budget, design, implement, evaluate, and document a significant computing or informatics product.

“When I ask students what they want to get out of senior project, some students want to work in specific domains: ‘This is the last time I’ll ever be able to write a game’; other students say, ‘I want to learn a new technology.’ Other students want to develop their leadership skills,” said Salvage.

“The beauty of the way we have senior project set up is: Whatever’s important to you, you can guide and you can lead your career moving forward,” he said.

External stakeholders, including industry partners and nonprofit organizations, initiate many of the projects, providing real-world requirements and ultimately benefiting from the final applications. Teams are often interdisciplinary, drawing students from across Drexel’s academic landscape, including the College of Engineering and the Digital Media Program in the Westphal College of Media Arts and Design.

This year’s competition recognized excellence across multiple categories.
