About the Talk:
In order to ensure that everyone can fully participate in our increasingly tech-driven society and to cultivate a diverse and competitive tech workforce, it's crucial to address the longstanding exclusion of students from historically marginalized groups in computing education. In this presentation, Payton will discuss research and practices aimed at creating inclusive computing education experiences, increasing the representation of students from historically excluded groups in computing, and improving outcomes for all students. Payton will also highlight the design principles and outcomes of the STARS Computing Corps NSF Alliance for Broadening Participation in Computing and the INVITE NSF AI Institute projects, and explore implications for expanding pathways for equity-focused computing education and opportunities for equity-focused AI education.

About the Speaker:
Jamie Payton, Professor and Chair of Computer and Information Sciences at Temple University, focuses on pervasive computing systems for health, expanding access to computing, and improving computer science education.

Previously at UNC Charlotte, she leads the STARS Computing Corps, engaging 2,500+ students in service projects and reaching 140,000+ future students. She directs NSF-funded programs and leads an REU Site at Temple. She's also involved in the Connected Learner project, revolutionizing CS education, and is a Co-PI for the NSF AI Institute for Inclusive and Innovative Technologies for Education (INVITE), focusing on AI workforce diversity and education.

About the Lecture:
This lecture is held to honor former Drexel Computer Science Professor Pragnesh Jay Modi (1975-2007) and his contributions to the field of artificial intelligence.
